The Grinch Musical Review
The Grinch is one of my FAVOURITE Christmas films. So when I found out it was on stage in musical form I was more excited than a kid on, well…Christmas!
How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a musical adaptation of the Dr Seuss children’s book that tells the story of a a social recluse – The Grinch – who hates Christmas and plots to stop it from happening! Living in a cave on the outskirts of Whoville – a super Christmassy town filled with cheer – The Grinch plans to steal all the presents on Christmas Eve so the Who’s can’t have their precious holiday…dun dun duuuuun!
Now the majority of us will have probably seen the Jim Carey movie version, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll know it word for word. It’s worth noting that while the musical does have nods to the film, it is mostly based on the original book, so the story line is a little bit wonky in comparison! But don’t worry – you’re a mean one Mr Grinch is still very much in there and it’s full of funny moments!
The set is made up of monochrome sketched props that mimic the old Seuss books, with the characters and their costumes bringing the colour. I loved the cartoon-like costumes of the Who’s and all their bubble shaped bodies. They were incredibly cute and quirky.
Edward Baker-Duly as The Grinch stole the show for me. He was perfect in this role and whilst channeling his inner Carey, he still managed to make it his own. Perfect comic timing and some serious laugh-out-loud moments throughout!
I also loved Holly Dale Spencer as Mama Who too! So over the top and cartoon-like with a cracking voice for her musical numbers too.
So if you’ve read my Grinch Musical review and you fancy a festive night at the theatre this December, this show might just be the one for you and the family!
