Seen by over 6 million people worldwide, Sister Act the musical has had a re-vamp for it’s new UK Tour! Directed by Craig Revel Horwood and starring the amazing vocal talents of Alexandra Burke, Sister Act is a night of belly laughs, 70’s glamour and unbreakable sisterhood.
Based on the 90’s smash hit movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith Sister Act sees a disco diva Delores Van Cartier seeking refuge after witnessing a murder. The local police department find her shelter posing as a nun in a local convent despite her protests. To make herself useful Delores uses her singing talents and experience to jazz up the church choir much to the disgust of the Mother Superior, but her talents and the rising popularity of her sisters may have other consequences.
I’ve seen Alexandra in The Bodyguard on stage before and while there’s no denying she can belt out all the tunes with incredible power, I find her acting a little over the top. In Sister Act however, this doesn’t really pose a problem as her character is larger than life and rather witty in places making it an excellent fit. Alice Stokoe was outstanding as Sister Mary Robert, the shy and retiring young nun with a surprisingly soulful and powerful voice and the whole cast seemed to work fabulously together.
The staging was grand, the costumes were glamourous and the ensemble were very talented indeed bringing their instruments on stage and playing throughout. The tunes were catchy and I thought the storyline moved on nicely with the play itself picking up speed halfway through the first half.
Sister Act is very funny and full of funk – if you’re a fan of the original film you need to see this show, you’ll be tapping your feet all the way to the carpark!
Sister Act is playing at the Regent Theatre until Saturday 13th May before moving onto its next tour venue – grab your tickets from the box office NOW!
