Lumie Bodyclock Review – Do SAD Lamps & Alarm Clocks ACTUALLY Work?

I’ve been a SAD sufferer for the last 10 years and the winter months for me can be incredibly tough. Seasonal depression can hit out of nowhere and even go un-noticed for a very long time. But if you’ve felt that drop in mood during the darker months, or you struggle to wake up when the sun isn’t shining, then Seasonal Affective Disorder could be affecting you too.
What is SAD?

SAD is a form of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern. It is often more prevalent during the winter months due to reduced exposure to sunlight.
From the NHS website – “Symptoms of SAD can include:
- a persistent low mood
- a loss of pleasure or interest in normal everyday activities
- feelings of despair, guilt and worthlessness
- feeling lethargic (lacking in energy) and sleepy during the day
- sleeping for longer than normal and finding it hard to get up in the morning
- craving carbohydrates and gaining weight
For some people, these symptoms can be severe and have a significant impact on their day-to-day activities.”
The main theory surrounding SAD is that those who suffer are unable to properly regulate the production of melatonin (the hormone that makes you feel sleepy) and serotonin (the hormone that affects mood, appetite and sleep). Without the natural trigger of sunlight to regulate things, SAD sufferers often produce more melatonin – the sleep hormone – and not enough serotonin – the happy hormone.
As you can imagine, going about each day with your body being pumped full of sleep hormones and not enough of the happy stuff isn’t easy!
How Do SAD Lamps Work?
SAD Lamps and Alarm Clocks create artificial sunlight inside your house. SAD lamps are propped up on desks and emit a steady stream of sunlight for the user. I sit in front of mine for a couple of hours while I’m doing my morning admin and drinking a coffee.
SAD Alarm Clocks replicate the rising sun by slowly increasing brightness over a certain amount of time while you sleep. When your alarm goes off the lamp is at full brightness and your room feels like a bright sunny day. This helps trigger your brain into switching from melatonin to serotonin production.

SAD Alarm Clocks can also be used in reverse to create the effect of a sunset at night.
I’ve done a lot over the years to turn my bedroom into a relaxing sanctuary. But one of the best investments I’ve made for my sleep has been my SAD alarm clock! Despite it not being the most stylish item on my bedside table, this little lamp has been a lifesaver for me in the winter months.

THE VERDICT – Do They Work?
My SAD lamp and alarm clock have been one of the best things for helping my seasonal affective disorder. Having not used them for a while I really noticed the difference they made to both my sleep and also my mood. For me it’s an instant uplift in the morning and makes a huge difference physically to how tired I feel. I use my alarm clock and my lamp alongside other things to help with my SAD, but if you’re wondering whether it’s worth buying an alarm clock to try then my verdict is 100% YES.
