When Joe and I last went down to London we stayed in the amazing M by Montcalm in Shoreditch but didn’t opt for breakfast in the morning. At around 11am we checked out and took a stroll around the area to find somewhere nice for brunch. After a quick look on Foursquare we stumbled across the very highly rated Friends of Ours, an unassuming trendy cafe with people sat outside in the Summer sunshine and a queue to get in! We took a risk and put our names down for a table and about 15 minutes later we were at our table.
The menu is simple at Friends of Ours – lots of eggs, green tea smoked salmon and sour dough bread – if you’re looking for a greasy fry up this isn’t your place. If you’re looking for locally roasted independent coffee and some hipster breakfasty bits then you’re in! The coffee at Friends of Ours is goooood. We both enjoyed a flat white and although I opted for a little sugar in mine it was really tasty and nice and strong to combat the copious amounts of wine ingested at Sketch the night before!
For food we both chose eggs and salmon – Joe with a traditional scrambled egg, me with a poached egg and beetroot hollandaise. It was delicious on freshly baked bread with green tea smoked salmon that was incredibly fresh and plentiful. I was a little wary about paying around £10 for eggs on toast but actually when it arrived and we tasted it, I was ok parting with my cash when the bill came.
It’s not your usual kind of breakfast cafe and in all honesty it’s a bit hipster but we thoroughly enjoyed our brunch so it deserves a mention in the restaurant blog archives. Certainly one to look out for if you fancy a fresh and colourful breakfast, brunch or lunch in Shoreditch – they’re open until 5pm all week!
