Energy balls, bliss balls, raw balls, they’re everywhere. I keep seeing these little spheres of fruit and nut all over the internet and the other week my curiosity finally got the better of me. I came across this recipe from She Can’t Eat What and made a be-line for the health food isle in Tescos that same afternoon! I’ve changed a few of the measurements around a little and because i don’t have a food processor (shock horror!) i made mine by hand but they turned out pretty darn tasty and have been a real saviour for me on my health food journey when tempted to hit the chocolate box!
What you’ll need
(makes around 24 balls!)
– 100g Almonds
– 50g Walnuts
– 12 Medjool Dates
– Juice and rind of 1 Medium Orange
– 2 tbsp Coconut Oil
– 30g Cocoa Powder
– Pinch of Salt
– Chop up your nuts and dates (by hand or in a processor)
– Add in your orange rind and juice, cocoa powder, salt and coconut oil and combine together
– Pinch off parts of the mixture and hand roll into balls
– Roll in a little more cocoa powder to coat and place in the fridge to harden
Coconut oil was an odd one for me as i’d never used it before. Also, almost £10 for a jar? Wow. Mine was solid (like wax) but with a little blast from the microwave in a bowl it turned runny and all was well in the world. These little chocolate orange monkeys still rack up around 90kcals per ball but it’s 90kcals of goodness rather than your usual refined sugar naughties so you’re all good – eat five! They’re actually incredibly rich although the orange flavours do lift the weight of the other ingredients, so one of these ‘will do ya’ with a cup of coffee in the afternoon. They also keep in the fridge for about a week…if they last that long.
I’m really pleased with my first foray into the world of energy balls and it’s certainly something i’ll think about making again, if not only because i spent £10 on a jar of coconut oil that is currently sat in the cupboard looking very out of place! I love the look of these Peanut Butter Oatmeal and these Carrot Cake Balls too…i can feel a new baking obsession coming on!
Have you tried any raw/energy ball recipes before? What are your favourite flavours?
