Thursday night my friend Lucy and I hopped on a train to Wolverhampton to watch Shrek The Musical at the Wolverhampton Grand. I’d missed this musical on some of it’s other tour stops so when I was asked to press night in Wolverhampton with a backstage tour I was there quicker than you can say Pinocchio!
Being backstage was fascinating! We saw all the costumes lined up, puppets waiting to be used and found out some production secrets about what happens before, during and after the show! It takes Dean Chisnall 2 hours to get Shrek-ified and they have a special wig oven to dry and clean all of the wigs from the show…and there’s a lot of wigs! It was so exciting to see where the magic happens and find out just what makes a show tick!
The show was one of the best I’ve seen in a while – and I’ve seen a lot of shows this year! The costumes, the set, the voices were all spectacular and we couldn’t stop smiling the whole way through. It followed the film perfectly with all the best bits kept in and made ten times funnier by the actors on stage. Shrek was bursting at the seams with fun and jokes for all ages which made for the best night out!
Hats off to Gerard Carey who played Lord Farquaad and was on his knees for the whole performance – He was hilarious and the choreography was just brilliant! The songs were so cleverly put together and the voices of all the cast raised the roof, the story was really fast paced and the two hours simply flew by.
The costumes were just perfect and every character was spot on – Shrek is a fantastic show that’s fun for everyone whether you’ve got kids or not!

If you can get tickets to see this show you absolutely must, our faces hurt from smiling so much and there were even some happy tears at the end! Shrek blew me away and I really wasn’t expecting it to be quite as good as it was – hats off to the whole cast!
