Last weekend I went for a little weekend away at the Malmaison Hotel in the Mailbox, Birmingham.

Having had an incredible experience in the Manchester Malmaison over New Year with their special Spa and Dinner packages I was excited to spend another night with our favourite boutique hotel brand.

THE HOTEL

Malmaison’s Birmingham branch is located in the trendy Mailbox right on the front steps. You can pop in for cocktails or a lovely meal if you’re not a guest but the reception is hidden away downstairs for those staying the night.

Sadly the lobby of the Birmingham Mal lacked the elegance and quirkiness of it’s Mancunian sister but it was still uber cool and overspilling with sultry Mal charm.

Parking was reasonable too in the Mailbox with a 15% discount for Malmaison customers.

THE ROOM

Our room was lovely. Spacious, dark, cool and incredibly clean. Monochrome colours with a splash of purple and a very lovely checked bathroom which although very well laid out and of a good size was impossible to photograph (sorry guys!).

The bed was nice and firm, perfect for me, and the boyfriend was incredibly impressed with the selection of sports channels available to keep him happy while I was inevitably taking forever to get ready!

Freshly laundered robes and slippers were waiting for us upon arrival along with a well stocked mini bar and all the information you could need about the hotel. The Birmingham Mal like Manchester also lacked a decent mirror with light to do your makeup in and although providing a lovely Olive & Fig shampoo and Shower Gel for guests to use they didn’t include a Conditioner or little toothpaste. Of course i’m nit picking here but toothpaste is always the thing I forget when I go away!

THE SPA

During our stay we were booked in for a half hour Back, Neck & Shoulder massage each in Le Petite Spa which was beautiful. Hidden away in the back of the hotel it’s a real haven in the hustle and bustle of the big city.

We changed into our robes and settled down with complimentary tea and water in their lovely relaxation room between the treatment rooms and the hot tub. At New Year we were so lucky to have the Manchester spa all to ourselves but even though there were a few others relaxing with us in Birmingham it was still wonderful.

I was massaged by Mandip who was incredibly friendly and made me feel right at home. She gave my back a well needed seeing to and left me feeling completely relaxed after my treatment – my only negative was that we didn’t have longer!

After a quick dip in the hot tub and a sit in the steam room we were ready to get back to the room and preen in preparation for our night on the town!

THE BRASSERIE

We ate in the Mal Brasserie at lunch as we had reservations elsewhere in the evening and I’m happy to report that the food was good. We were slightly disappointed with the starter of Chicken Liver Parfait and Toasted Ciabatta which was essentially just a slice of parfait served with two teeny tiny bits of bread and a dollop of chutney on the side. It was very tasty but lacked quite a lot of finesse!

Luckily the Brasserie made it up to us with two delicious mains of Steak & Frites and Pan-friend Salmon with crushed potatoes and a cream sauce. The Steak was perfectly cooked as was my salmon and everything just went together perfectly for a filling but not too excessive midday meal. For pudding it just had to be Creme Brulee which was absolutely adorable and just as delicious and i’m also happy to report that the Malbar cocktails were very good too…we both sampled a few, just for review purposes of course!

We had a fantastic stay at the Birmingham Malmaison and we’re already planning another Mal weekend away at one of their other hotels.

Malmaison hit the nail on the head for me with their mix of sultry interiors and a luxury boutique feel throughout – they ooze cool and are ideal for couples looking for a romantic night away in Birimgham.

During our stay we did notice a number of hen parties at the hotel too so I’d be really keen to try out one of their Girly Night In packages with a friend over a couple of cocktails and a pedicure!
