Sunshine? Is That You? | xameliax Weekly Vlog #100

Holy sunshine Batman, what’s that shiny yellow thing in the sky? Why is it so warm?

Ahhhhh yes, that was our 4 days of British Summer!

I’ve always wanted to work for myself. Craved that sense of freedom and flexibility that comes with being your own boss. Need a day off? Jiggle your diary around and take it. Feeling crappy and fancy pottering into the ‘office’ at 10am instead of 9? You got it.

However, I realised the other day that now I’ve worked my arse off to get that Girl Boss status, I don’t use it as much as I should! I’m flexible with my working day and I tend to start at 10 and finish at 6/7pm because I know I’m more productive in the afternoons. I take my lunch when I like and even pop out for half an hour around 3pm to walk Toby and get some fresh air.

But I always feel guilty taking a day off.

My work will always be there when I get back as I’d never miss a contracted deadline just to bugger off and have some fun. It doesn’t leave any colleagues in the lurch. I’m still technically getting paid as I stretch my earnings from each job out across the month into a salary.

So what’s the problem?

I think the issue is the stigma that comes along with being a blogger. There are a lot of people out there who don’t think we work hard or that our jobs are taxing in any way. And yes, while a lot of my job is super fun (reviewing restaurants, musicals, heading off around the world) it still doesn’t mean I’m completely switched off whilst doing it or completely relaxed. It’s still work, I’m still ‘on duty’ and the hours are sometimes exhausting – social media never sleeps and my work very often spills over into weekends or evenings. So when I take time off I feel like I’m being judged and I feel guilty.

But on Thursday our little island was hotter than Greece so I did it! I turned off my emails, shut down my laptop and I went pottery painting. I walked in the sun, took Toby to the park and ate al fresco as the sun went down. And you know what?

I enjoyed every second, and I didn’t feel guilty one bit.

Also this week I held two Bumble events which were so much fun, Toby went swimming and I tried pole dancing again with some rather painful consequences! ENJOY!
