What do you get if you cross a rabbit, a caterpillar, a cat and a mad hatter? Wonderland of course!
Last night was press night for Wonderland at The Regent in Stoke which is currently on a UK Tour after a smashing run in the US. With in-your-face power songs, crazy costumes, a bright and inviting set and some unbelievable voices this is certainly a show that pulls out all the stops.
Adapted from Lewis Carol’s Alice Through The Looking Glass, Wonderland sees a modern day, down-trodden mum thrust into a strange and bonkers magical world with her daughter…and the guy from the flat downstairs! Met by a wise caterpillar, a crazy cat and a mad hatter they go on a journey of self-discovery with a lot of tea and a few jam tarts along the way!
Let’s be honest, the story of Alice in Wonderland doesn’t make a great deal of sense, so if you’re looking for a realistic or even closely knit plotline you won’t find it here. The story is scatty at best but saved by the excellent stand alone character introductions and musical numbers. It’s hard to pick out the best voices and characters in Wonderland because everyone is simply outstanding. Wendi Peters, Kerry Ellis, Natalie McQueen, Kayi Ushe and Dominic Owen all blew me away with both their voices and physicality. Absolutely brilliant, witty and goosebump-inducing on the high notes.
If you fancy a weird and wonderful night at the theatre with killer show tunes and a bit of madness thrown in for good measure then Wonderland is for you!
