On Friday that boy i hang around with turned 30 and for the past 4 months i’ve been planning a gigantic surprise to mark the occasion!
We woke up on his birthday in time for him to open his presents which consisted of a brand new kindle paperwhite, kick ass coffee machine with accessories and a few personal bits and bobs before heading off for a delicious surprise lunch at Marco Pierre White’s restaurant! We both enjoyed a gigantic steak, starters and a glass of Champagne before having a little gamble in the casino! On the way ‘home‘ my sat nav somehow took us to the airport instead and his face was such a picture when i pulled into the carpark and whipped out two suitcases from the boot all packed with everything we both needed for a trip away! Having checked in online i managed to get him through security and into the airport bar with a beer before handing over a vintage postcard of Edinburgh Castle finally revealing where we were going! 40 minutes and a mile high gin later we were in Edinburgh and making our way to the hotel for the weekend!
Three guesses where we ended up…the Edinburgh Malmaison of course! We got there just in time to check in and settle down for bubble time in the Mal bar. After two glasses of Lanson and complimentary canapes we headed up to the room to freshen up and enjoy dinner and more drinks in the Brasserie! The Edinburgh Mal is lovely, still with the traditional Malmaison sultry edge but unlike others we’ve stayed in it had it’s own charm with tartan cushions and old winding staircases – beautiful and luxurious. In the morning we had a bit of a lie in and took a trip into the centre for yet another surprise – Whisky Tasting at the Scotch Whisky Experience! As there are no working distilleries in Edinburgh i’d booked us in here on their gold tour which contained an education into how whisky is made and the differences between the Scotch whisky regions, a tasting tutorial and of course lots of whisky’s to try. Joe absolutely loved it and i discovered a few malts i really liked too, i’d highly recommend popping in there for a visit if you’re a whisky fan visiting the Scottish capital.
In the evening we headed back to the hotel for a sit down after a lot of walking during the day and decided to order our dinner to the room with a couple of cocktails whilst we were getting ready! The Malmaison burgers were honestly the best burgers i’d ever eaten and the fries were to die for – very happy bunnies all round! After refueling and changing clothes we headed out for yet another surprise – a night of laughs at The Stand Comedy Club! Th acts were brilliant and the setting was so cute – make sure you get there when the doors open if you want a seat. We settled down on our table with a few very reasonably priced drinks and waited for the comedians and comediennes to entertain us for the evening…and entertain us they did. Another highly recommended venue for those visiting Scotland who feel like something fun to do in the evening – the food looked pretty hearty too!
On the last day we packed up our cases, waved bye bye to the Edinburgh Mal and headed off for the last surprise of the weekend – a trip to Edinburgh Castle! Joe is a giant history geek and absolutely loved wandering round the castle with his audio guide snapping away on his brand new iphone! I actually enjoyed our trip round the castle too (although i would have rather gone to the zoo!) and we finished off with a beautiful afternoon tea in the courtyard before heading back to the airport to fly back home.
Our weekend away was officially declared the ‘best birthday ever‘ and we made some amazing memories that hopefully Joe will remember for a lifetime – i know i certainly will.
Mission make his 30th birthday completely incredible = complete!
